Why We Recommend Booking Direct (Sometimes) in Thailand

Here’s something most travel sites won’t tell you: booking platforms like Booking.com and Agoda charge hotels 15-25% commission on every reservation. That’s a significant chunk, and it affects how hotels price their rooms.

When to Book Direct

Boutique hotels and small properties: these places feel the commission most. Many will match or beat OTA prices if you email them directly, and throw in extras like airport pickup, room upgrades, or late checkout. Villa Mahabhirom in Chiang Mai, for example, offers a complimentary cooking class for direct bookings.

Longer stays (5+ nights): hotels are more willing to negotiate on longer stays. A quick email saying “I’d like to book 7 nights, what’s your best direct rate?” almost always gets a better deal than any platform.

When OTAs Win

Chain hotels: big chains have rate parity agreements, the price is the same everywhere. But OTAs often have loyalty programs, cashback, or credit card partnerships that effectively lower the price.

Last-minute deals: Agoda and Booking.com sometimes get distressed inventory at genuinely lower rates. If you’re booking same-day or next-day, check the apps first.

Our Approach

We include both OTA links and direct booking links for every hotel we recommend. We earn a commission if you book through our OTA links, but we’ll always tell you when booking direct is the smarter move. Honesty builds trust, and trust is all we have.
