Four venues on the island sell morning and afternoon visits, all rated above our bar, and they are not offering the same thing to the elephants.
What we checked, 18 September 2026
Four Phuket elephant venues clear our bar of 9.0 out of 10 and 50 reviews, and all four are listed rather than one being presented as the obvious choice. What they differ on is contact with the animals, which is quoted from each listing below in the operators' own words. A guest score measures whether visitors enjoyed a morning; it is not a welfare audit, and we have not been to any of them.

Elephant tourism in Thailand has been moving away from riding for a decade, and Phuket now has a cluster of venues selling half-day visits instead. Four of them clear our scoring bar comfortably. That is where the easy part ends, because the four are not offering the same experience, and the difference is the animals’ rather than yours.

That table is the whole point of this page. The first venue is an observation model: retired working elephants in a large area, watched rather than touched, with the island’s first elephant hospital on site. The other three involve direct contact, usually bathing. Direct contact requires elephants that will tolerate being handled by strangers all day, and that is a different proposition from an animal left alone to forage, whatever the brochure calls it.
What a score does and does not tell you. All four numbers above measure whether visitors enjoyed their morning. None of them measures how the elephants are housed the other twenty hours, what the chaining and hooking practice is, or how the animals were acquired. Klook marks all four as having passed its own onsite welfare assessment, which is Klook’s assessment rather than ours and rather than a government one.
Our position, stated plainly. We have not been to any of these places, so we are not ranking them on welfare, and we will not pretend a 4.9 is an inspection report. If the welfare question matters to you, the observation-only model is the one that asks least of the animal, and it is also the one with the smallest review sample here.
No prices. Klook quotes these in US dollars across several packages, so a figure here would be out of date or simply wrong by the time you clicked.
